Components of the Hybrid Mattress

Hybrid mattresses are generally composed of two types of mattress combined into one in order to get the benefits of each. In order to understand the hybrid mattress, lets take a closer look at the two most common components: 

Gel memory foam, or memory foam: Memory foam has been around for a long time.  Since 1966 when it was introduced by NASA, it has been used in everything from planes to shoes.  In a mattress, memory foam is known for significantly lowering weight transfer.  It can absorb high energy while still feeling very soft.  With gel memory foam you have the added benefit of cooling gel as well.  Both versions are very good at matching the contours of your body to distribute pressure and weight evenly.  

Innerspring mattresses: The innerspring took off in the early 1930s but was designed by Heinrich Westphal in the early 1870s.  The idea was to place metal coils inside a mattress in order to have a sleeping surface that would be pliable. Although small changes have been made over the years, they have remained fairly the same. Usually innerspring come with either individually pocketed coils or open coils surrounded by a cotton fabric blend and polyurethane foam.  

Bringing it All Together

A hybrid mattress has three key layers.  The base layer is usually a 1 inch layer of foam, that serves as the basis of the whole mattress. The main core of the mattress is the support layer which is where you will find the innerspring components.  This will give the sleeper that familiar firmness that comes with an innerspring.  Finally the top layer is the part of the mattress that will add to the comfort level and is where the memory foam or gel memory foam is added for the properties of body contouring and cooling.  This combination is why it’s easy to see why the hybrid may be the best of both worlds for many.
